Chloe Kim's Team USA Olympic Snowboarding Hat Free Crochet Pattern

Who has Olympic fever? This girl. We have been watching the games non-stop since the opening ceremony. I was watching when the first broadcast of the women's snowboarding competition was aired during the day. I was so amazed when I saw little Chloe Kim (who is a mere two inches taller than myself) win gold on the halfpipe. I was captured by her spirit and joy and couldn't stop watching. We stayed tuned in until they rolled out the winners' platforms and brought out those adorable medal avatars- the Korean stuffed tigers.

I knew that when I saw Chloe wearing that adorable chunky knit hat that it would instantly become a sensation! I admit that I really wanted to buy one. I wondered who made them, and I wanted to know more about the snowboarding team's uniform design, which cleverly mocked US space suits. 

After scouring the interwebs I realized that the hat would be impossible to purchase. I did discover that it was created by the snowboarding brand Burton, which designs and sells snowboards, apparel, accessories and gear. Burton designed the entire snowboarding uniform line for Team USA.

I was sure that many fiber artists would be creating copy-cat designs to please droves of customers clamoring for the iconic hat. Clearly the hat is knit. Experienced crocheters and knitters can tell the difference. The challenge for me was how to recreate the knit-look ribbing with crochet techniques. 

I've decided that for my design, half double crochet in the third loop would be perfect to replicate the ribbing of Chloe's knitted hat. I'm sure there are lots of talented knitters out there who can duplicate it exactly. I've also enjoyed the hats and winter wear of other teams as well. For example, Ragnhild Mowinckel of Norway has been sporting this wide headband at nearly every event. From this picture it's not so plain but from what I've seen on TV this item is definitely crocheted! It would also be a fun one to recreate!

I have actually made this hat twice. When I went to the store I bought two kinds of super bulky, wool and acrylic. The acrylic hat pictured below took two full skeins and felt so darn heavy on my head, I doubt it would be very nice to wear for too long. But the shine and visual effect this yarn gives the ribbing are unmatched. The pom pom is also much flouncier- like the Burton hat.

Worked using Lion Brand's Hometown USA (6- Super Bulky) 100% acrylic in "Los Angeles Tan"

I also made this first prototype 6 stitches longer than the finished product (featured in this pattern), and it requires the brim to be folded up much wider to achieve the same look as Chloe. The pattern hat, pictured below is made with wool. When the pattern was shortened 6 stitches it gives the hat just the right overall length. The pom pom came out a little stiffer, but I think it's very cute. If you try a different yarn be sure to show me how it turns out by using #hautekippy on social media!

Chloe's Team USA Olympic Snowboarding Chunky Knit-look Hat FREE crochet pattern!

Hook: N/10mm

Yarn: 6-Super Bulky, Lion Brand Wool-Ease Thick & Quick in Fisherman

Gauge: 5 rows, 9 sts =4” HDC in 3rd loop

Difficulty: Easy

Materials: Tapestry Needle, Large 4” pom pom

Finished Size: Adult, apx. 20”

Special Stitches: HDC in 3rd Loop- Half double crochet in the third loop, on the WRONG side of the stitch, make a hdc in the long horizontal bar located directly under the “v” on top of the stitch indicated. This pushes the “v” out sideways, making a knit look ribbed pattern on the textile.

Notes: It is possible to hdc in the 3rd loop of both the RIGHT and WRONG sides of an hdc stitch, however, in this pattern you are to turn the work at the end of the row and make the next row of hdc stitches in the wrong side (facing you) of the previous row. If you need help in determining the right and wrong sides of crochet work, many helpful videos and tutorials are available on the internet to explain this. 

Hat:

Chain 27

Row 1: hdc in each ch across, ch 1, turn. (26 sts)

Row 2: hdc in 3rd loop of each st across, ch 1 turn. (26 sts)

Rows 3-24: repeat row 2.

Row 25: hdc in 3rd loop of each st across, do not break yarn, fold work in half, matching up stitches of first and last rows, ch 1, sl st through back loop only and front loop only of both layers across to form a tube. Fasten off.

Pom Pom:

Cut cardboard strip 2” wide and lay a piece of yarn apx. 6” horizontally along strip. Wrap leftover yarn many, many times around cardboard and yarn. Wrap more than you think you need in order to make a plump and fluffy pom pom. Tie ends of yarn together very TIGHTLY around wrapped yarn. Cut wrapped yarn on opposite side of tie. Trim pom pom into symmetrical sphere. 

Finishing:

Thread a yarn needle with a length of yarn and weave yarn around top of hat, cinch and tie off to draw top of hat into a point. Sew pom pom on top of hat. Weave in ends. Fold up brim as desired.

Preemie Gift Set

We've had a very special, extra small addition to our family recently. One of our cousins had her baby very, very early. In fact, she was born at just 27 weeks. Things were precarious at first, but now I'm happy to say she is growing faster than we could hope for!

Immediately, I knew I needed to make preemie hats. I waited patiently until she was allowed to wear her own clothes. I made my best guess at her head circumference, based on photos of her and a helpful chart I found on the internet.

I made her a basic beanie and added adorable kitty ears, as well as a cinched bow headband. Everything took mere minutes to make, and came out so teeny tiny! It's simply adorable. You can customize the look and add stripes, or just make one in every color. Once you start, you won't want to stop! Just look how precious!!!

These could make excellent gifts for friends or relatives, or make a bunch and donate them to your local hospital. It's a great project for your women's group too. In fact, I give exclusive permission for any women's group or crochet charity to use and distribute this pattern for purposes of donating hats and headbands to babies in hospitals in your local area!

I made my favorite Preemie a gift selection of hats and headbands in different sizes so she could grow into them during her stay in the NICU. Work these adorable little do's in any worsted weight yarn, refer to gauge for sizing and resizing. Remember, some thicker yarns will yield bigger stitches and thinner yarns will yield smaller stitches, adjust gauge accordingly to imitate my results. This can be achieved by either adjusting working tension or hook size.

Hook: H/8 5mm

Yarn: medium/worsted 4 weight

Gauge: 6 sts = 2” in HDC

Materials: Tapestry Needle

Finished Sizes: 10”, 11” & 12” head circumference, apx gestational ages 30, 32 & 34 weeks respectively.

Special Stitches:

hdc inc- half double crochet increase. Make two hdc in same st.

Fhdc- foundation half double crochet. A technique for making a chainless, starting foundation in lieu of chaining. There are many helpful tutorials and videos on the internet to help you master this skill.

Notes: Pattern is for a hat, with or without kitty ears or pom pom, and a bow style headband. Instructions for different sizes are listed separately for hat, and successively for headband (e.g. “10 (12, 14)”). Simply follow instructions for desired item and size, make number of stitches indicated for size.

Hat:

All Sizes:

Form Magic Ring.

Round 1: hdc 10 into magic ring, join with a sl st, ch 1. (10 sts)

Round 2: make 2 hdc in each st around, join, ch 1. (20 sts)

Round 3: *hdc, hdc inc*, repeat ** around, join, ch 1. (30 sts)

10”/30 weeks:

Round 4-8: hdc in each st around, join, ch 1. (30 sts)

Round 9: hdc in each st around, fasten off, weave in ends.

11”/32 weeks:

Round 4: *hdc 9, hdc inc*, repeat ** around, join, ch 1. (33 sts)

Rounds 5-9: hdc in each st around, join, ch 1. (33 sts)

Kitty Ears:

Make two.

Ch 3.

Row 3: Make 2 hdc into first st, hdc, hdc, hdc, 2 hdc into last st, (7 sts), pivot work, sl st evenly along side of ear to point, ch 2, pivot work, sl st evenly along other side of ear to bottom, ch 1, sl st along bottom of ear, join at corner, fasten off.

Hat Finishing:

1. Sew ears where desired onto top of hat.
2. If desired make or buy a pom pom and sew to top of hat.
3. Weave in all ends.

Headband:

Round 1: Fhdc 30 (33, 36), join with a sl st, ch 1. (30, 33, 36 sts)

Round 2: hdc in each st around, join, ch 1.

Round 3: hdc in each st around, join, fasten off.

Headband Finishing:

1. Using starting tail, join bottom of foundation row to close gap.
2. Take both yarn tails and tie them together securely over top of the right side of the headband to cinch it in the middle. Trim tails.
3. Using a length of yarn, wrap chiched middle of headband to form a “bow knot” less than 1” wide.
4. Turn headband inside out, and sew wrapping tail back and forth through the underside of the “knot” several times to permanently secure it.
5. Weave in ends.

Rainbow Bright Hat

I hope everyone's Christmases and other holidays were happy and bright! Mine were very enjoyable. Big Girl and Little One were very good for Santa and had a nice Christmas morning. I've enjoyed lazing about the house as we count down the days til New Years Eve.

Today I have for you the very last edition to our Season of Hats this winter. If you've missed any previous designs click here to see a list of my free patterns you can scroll through. This pattern includes instructions for both a beanie and a messy bun style. I'm working with Red Heart Super Saver Stripes in Favorite Stripe, it's the rainbow colored one. I love rainbows. I love rainbow patterns and and rainbow colors. Bright multi-colored yarns always appeal to me and I find myself buying skeins of variegated yarns and not knowing what to make with them. Does this ever happen to you? I tried making my ready made goods in so many colors for people to choose from, but no one wants cerulean, chartreuse and magenta accessories. Neutral is the thing. I had to increase my stash of neutrals just to appease my customer base. I know what you're thinking. Poor thing, she had to buy more yarn! Anyway...

Red Heart Super Saver Stripes - Favorite Stripe

The variegation pattern to this yarn is specific: It starts at green with a double length and moves to yellow, orange, red, purples and a double length of blue before transitioning back to purple, red, orange, yellow, and into a double length of green before transitioning back to yellow, orange, red, purple and back to another double length of blue. The pattern continues in this way.




I start my hat at green because I like the way the blue repeats back into purple and red near the middle of the hat. If you want to have a complete-non repeating rainbow pattern, you can very easily cut and ball the yarn, reattaching at the desired color.

I made a fun applique heart to the hat to add to the brightness. It's simply my applique patches pattern heart made with a larger hook (the H hook). You can size the heart up or down using a hook of your choosing. The heart can be sewn on or slip stitched on. I prefer to slip stitch the heart on. I take up the yarn from inside the hat and make slip stitches along the outline of the heart. This gives the heart a nice crisp border and secures it cleanly. Simply join with an invisible join, tie the ends in a strong square knot, and pull them into the space between the heart and the hat to hide.

Hook: H/5mm
Yarn: Red Heart Super Saver Stripes in Favorite Stripe, Red Heart Super Saver in Red
Gauge: 6 sts, 5 rows = 2” in HDC
Difficulty: Beginner
Materials: yarn needle
Size: Fits average adult apx. 22”, Heart Applique is 3"




Special Stitches:

Hdc Inc- half double crochet increase, make two hdc in the the next st

Note: This pattern can make a messy bun hat or a regular beanie with no hole. To make a regular hat, follow “Beanie Hat” directions for first three rounds, then continue at round 2 for Bun Hat. To make a messy bun hat, follow “Bun Hat” directions beginning at round 1, ignore directions for previous rounds.

Beanie Hat:

Round 1: hdc 10 into a magic ring
Round 2: make 2 hdc into each st around, join, ch 1. (20 sts)
Round 3: *hdc, hdc inc*, repeat ** around, join, ch 1. (30 sts)
Continue with round 2 of bun hat.




Bun Hat:

Round 1: hdc 30 into an elastic hair tie, join ch 1. (30 sts)
Round 2: *hdc, hdc, hdc inc*, repeat ** around, join ch 1, (40 sts)
Round 3: *hdc, hdc, hdc, hdc inc*, repeat ** around, join ch 1, (50 sts)
Round 4: *hdc, hdc, hdc, hdc, hdc inc*, repeat ** around, join ch 1, (60 sts)
Round 5: hdc in each st around, join ch 1. (60 sts)
Rounds 6-18: repeat round 5, or to desired length.
Fasten off, weave in ends.


Heart Applique:

Using Red Yard, or color of your choice.

Form magic ring, ch 2

Round 1: make 11 dc in magic ring, join to first dc with a sl st.

Round 2: ch 3, 3 tr into first st, 3 tr in next st, 2 dc, 2 dc, dc, (dc, tr, dc) in next st, dc, 2 dc, 2 dc, 3 tr, 3 tr in last st, ch 2, sl st in same st. fo, weave in ends.

Finishing:

Sew heart applique onto hat where desired and stitch around edge, or slip st through both layers to secure. Weave in all ends.

Mae's Blanket Hat - Two hats in one pattern!

Ho Ho Ho! It's almost Christmas! Last year at this time- and I can't believe it's already been a year- I published my first amigurumi pattern. Check out my super cute and quirky Corn Cob Christmas Ornament. It's so adorable! My kids loved seeing it come out of the ornament box this year, they had fun deciding where to place it on the tree.


This year, we continue our season of hats with a special two-in-one blanket hat pattern! Blanket yarn has been around for a little while now. It's super bulky and super fun to work with. Anything you make will work up quick due to the bulk, and be very fluffy, warm and fuzzy. I've got another blanket yarn pattern as well, my luxurious spa wrap.

This hat was designed for a very special girl I know. She loves to wear a hat 24/7 as a source of security and her sensory processing is comforted by soft textures. She feels nice and snug when she can tie the ear flaps under her chin. This hat checks all the boxes for her, and I'm sure, many other people. Who couldn't love the softness of a blanket crocheted into the warmest hat ever?

Hook: L/8mm & H/5mm
Yarn: Generic Blanket Yarn Mint, Bernat Blanket Yarn Grey, Red Heart Super Saver Pink
Gauge: 8 sts = 4” in HDC
Difficulty: Easy
Materials: yarn needle, pom pom
Size: Fits average adult apx. 22”




Special Stitches:

Hdc Inc- half double crochet increase, make two hdc in the the next st
Hdc2tog- half double crochet two together, a half double crochet decrease

Notes:
Turning ch never counts as a st, After joining, make first st of round in next st, make last st of round in join. Use L/8mm hook for blanket yarn. H/5mm hook is used only for kitty inner ear.

Hat:

Round 1: hdc 10 into a magic ring
Round 2: make 2 hdc into each st around, join, ch 1. (20 sts)

Finishing:

To make a Pom Pom Hat- securely sew large color coordinating pom pom on top of hat.




To make a Kitty Ear Hat- construct and then sew on two kitty ears and inner ears as follows:

Kitty ear, with blanket yarn:

1. Ch 3.
2. Dc 3 in third ch from hook, turn, ch 2. (3 dc)
3. Dc 2 in first st, dc, dc 2 in last st, turn, ch 2. (5 dc)

Kitty inner ear, worsted yarn:

1. Ch 3.
2. Dc 3 in third ch from hook, turn, ch 2. (3 dc)
3. Dc 2 in first st, dc, dc 2 in last st, turn, ch 2. (5 dc)
4. Dc 2 in first st, dc, dc, dc, dc 2 in last st, turn, ch 2. (7 dc)
5. Ch 1, pivot ear, sl st evenly up side of ear, at top ch 1, continue sl st evenly down other side, ch 1, sl st along bottom and join at corner.
6. Sew inner ears onto big ears.

Sew kitty ears onto top of hat and weave in all ends. To make decorative hat trim, hold two strands of color coordinated worsted together, join at center back and sl st evenly along brim using L/8mm hook. For best look, join with an invisible  join and fasten off.

The Snowball Bun Hat!

Thanks for indulging me friends. The season of bun hats continues with my second variation on the Kip Bun Hat. This one is simply precious! It's called the Snowball because the bobbles are in white, contrasted by a rich navy blue. The pattern features alternating color changes and the changes on the brim are especially complicated. This pattern will be an Intermediate Level for this reason.

I have used a shimmering white yarn to make the "snowballs" really pop and shine! This hat is an adorable winter style that you will truly love! It's definitely one of a kind.

Now about those color changes... 

It's gonna get tricky around here. I've managed to find a way, and I'm sure it's not the only way nor am I the first one to do this, but I haven't really seen this done anywhere else. I change colors every other stitch while simultaneously alternating between dc and fpdc to create a depth in the color field unlike anything else I've seen lately! It's a pretty cool way to crochet and it looks amazing! I don't even know what to call this technique, but I can describe it to you as best I can and hope you're willing to try it out with me.

Here's how I do it...

The last three rounds of the hat are comprised of double crochet and front post double crochet stitches that alternate colors every other stitch. The dc's are made in white and the fpdc's are made in navy. To accomplish this we must switch colors before the stitch is completed. Make the stitch indicated up to the final yo, then pick up the alternating color and finish the stitch. Continue by beginning the next stitch in the color just picket up, to the final yo, then pick up previous color and finish the stitch. Continue in this manner, repeating the process to make each stitch in alternating color pattern. What this creates is a rich and dynamic texture, the navy fpdc stitches pop out from the white background mimicking the bobbles above them in contrast.

It may take some practice, it's definitely an awkward maneuver to switch yarns so often. Once you get the hang of it, this decorative technique is one you can employ to add visual interest to any number of projects... including my Sweet Scallops Boot Cuffs, which also use fpdc stitches!

Yarn: Red Heart With Love Metallic in White and Loops & Threads Impeccable in Navy
Gauge: 6 HDC = 2” OR 1 bobble repeat = 1”
Difficulty: Intermediate
Materials: 1 hair elastic, yarn needle

Special Stitches:

Hdc Inc- half double crochet increase, make two hdc in the the next st

Bobble Stitch - yo, insert hook into next st, yo, draw up loop, yo, draw thru two loops, *yo, insert hook into same st, yo, draw up a loop, yo, draw thru two loops*, repeat** two more times, (5 loops on hook) yo, draw thru all loops. Bobble will poof out behind work.

Fpdc- front post double crochet: double crochet around the front of the post of the indicated stitch, instead of into the “v” on top of the stitch as usual.




Notes:

1. Ch 1 at beginning of round does not count as a stitch. Always make first stitch of round in same stitch as join & ch 1.
2. Do not break yarn in between color changes unless you want to individually weave in all the yarn tails. You may carry yarns along inside, picking up and dropping as necessary.

Color changes: In last three rounds of hat you will be alternating colors every other stitch. Make dc or fpdc as indicated up to final yo, pick up other color and finish stitch. Begin next stitch in new color up to final yo, pick up previous color and finish stitch. Continue in this manner to make stitches in alternating colors.

Hat:

Begin with white
Join yarn to hair elastic, ch 1.

Round 1: Hdc 30 around hair elastic, join with a sl st to the first hdc, ch 1. Keep right side facing.

Round 2: join navy, *hdc, hdc, hdc inc*, repeat ** around, join, ch 1. (40 sts)

Andi Bun Hat

I told you this would be a season of bun hats, and I won't hold out on you. Even though I didn't make enough time to publish two patterns last month (I tend to prioritize my kids over the blog most of the time) I've still got some new designs and some new plays on old designs that I'm drying to share with you. Recently I've been delving into colorwork and have been having a lot of fun re-working old patterns into amazing new creations.

Today we're taking a new look at Kip's Bun Hat. A client recently showed me a photograph of a hat in certain colors, burgundy, teal and rich royal purple, but she wanted it in the style of the Kip. Intrigued, I began working the rounds of my most familiar pattern alternating the colors into what turned out to be a stunningly beautiful combination.

Named in my client's honor the Andi was born! It turned out absolutely spectacularly and I couldn't be more pleased.

We are going to be doing some color changes, so this makes the Andi one of my few Intermediate Level patterns. If you're still a beginner, don't be intimidated, try it out! And if you love the look of Andi but want to make it in a solid color, or just aren't feeling the color changes then visit the original Kip's Bun Hat pattern.

Another word to the wise, any of my bun hats can be converted to toboggans (with no bun hole) by using the following formula:

Bun Hat to Regular Hat Conversion Formula

1. Begin with magic ring
2. Stitch 10 into magic ring, pull closed, join, ch 1 (10 sts)
3. Stitch 2 into each st around, join, ch 1 (20 sts)
4. *Stitch 1, st 2* around, join, ch 1 (30 sts)
5. continue following pattern at round 2.

This works because all my bun hat patterns start with 30 stitches around an elastic hair tie. The diameter of the hair tie is approximately two rounds of crochet, therefore, to begin without a hole, make two rounds which eventually equals 30 stitches. Then you can continue any bun hat pattern after the beginning hair tie round. The formula uses the word "stitch" instead of specifying which stitch to ensure it is applicable to any pattern. Simply substitute in whichever stitch the bun hat you are working requires. For my bun hats, that's usually the HDC. It's kinda my favorite stitch. Now let's do this!

Andi’s Bun Hat

Hook: H8/5MM

Yarn: 
Red Heart Super Saver in Real Teal
Red Heart Super Saver in Burgundy
I Love This Yarn in Purple

Gauge: 6 HDC = 2” or 1 bobble repeat = 1”
Difficulty: Intermediate
Materials: 2” hair elastic, yarn needle


Special Stitches:


Hdc Inc- half double crochet increase, make two hdc in the the next st


Bobble Stitch - yo, insert hook into next st, yo, draw up loop, yo, draw thru two loops, *yo, insert hook into same st, yo, draw up a loop, yo, draw thru two loops*, repeat** two more times, (5 loops on hook) yo, draw thru all loops. Bobble will poof out behind work.


Fpdc- front post double crochet: double crochet around the front of the post of the indicated stitch, instead of into the “v” on top of the stitch as usual. 


Notes: Ch 1 at beginning of round does not count as a stitch. Always make first stitch of round in same stitch as join & ch 1. Do not break yarn in between color changes unless you want to individually weave in all the yarn tails. You may carry yarns along inside, picking up and dropping colors when necessary.


Hat:

Begin with PurpleJoin yarn to hair elastic, ch 1.


Round 1: Hdc 30 around hair elastic, join with a sl st to the first hdc, ch 1. Keep right side facing. 


Round 2: join burgundy, *hdc, hdc, hdc inc*, repeat ** around, join, ch 1. (40 sts)


Round 3: pick up purple, *hdc, hdc, hdc, hdc inc*, repeat ** around, join, ch 1. (50 sts)


Round 4: join teal, *hdc, hdc, hdc, hdc, hdc inc*, repeat ** around, join, ch 1 (60 sts)


Round 5: pick up purple, hdc in each st around, join, ch 1, pick up burgundy. (60 sts)


Round 6: turn work so wrong side is facing, sc in the first st, bobble in the next st, *sc, sc, bobble*, repeat ** around to  last st, sc in the last st, join, ch 1, turn. (20 bobbles)


Rounds 10 &11: pick up purple, repeat rounds 7 & 8.


Round 12: pick up burgundy, repeat round 6.


Rounds 13 & 14: pick up purple, repeat rounds 7 & 8.


Round 15: pick up teal, repeat round 6, then turn so right side is facing.


Round 16: pick up purple, hdc in each st around, join, ch 1.


Round 17: hdc in each st around, join, ch 2.

Round 18: pick up burgundy, dc in each st around, join, ch 2. 


Round 19: *dc, fpdc*, repeat ** around, join, ch 2. 


Rounds 20: repeat round 19, but do not ch 2.


Round 21: sl st very loosely around rim of hat, join, fo, weave in ends.

Rounds 7 & 8: pick up purple, sc in each st around, join, ch 1. (60 sts)

Round 9: pick up teal, repeat round 6.

Jailen Puff Hat

Is the weather starting to turn in your neck of the woods yet? Our fall foliage is so beautiful, and we've had an unseasonable warm streak to enjoy it! I hope that wherever you are, you are having a beautiful autumn. To continue with our "Season of Hats" I have a very special children's hat for you today.

The request for this hat came from the very sweet friend of my cousin. Her daughter is just the cutest, and she has a beautiful head full of springy, bouncy, natural black hair. She loves to wear winter hats, but there aren't any in the stores that can accommodate her luscious locks. She loves the idea of bun hats, but can't find any with two holes instead of one.

I've said it before and I'll say it again, necessity is indeed the mother of invention. When you need something, and can't find it, make it! (Or crochet it)

Now my friend's daughter and my Little One are about the same age. Though she has the wrong kind of hair to get the desired affect, I used Little One as a model and guinea pig to make the Jailen Puff Hat. So named for the self described "puffs" of hair that my little client loves to sport as part of her favorite hair-do.

I wanted to make sure that the hat was warm and comfy, had cute styling and most importantly could accommodate those two puffs of hair. If your little love has straight hair, feel free to adjust the size of the holes on the sides of the hat making them slightly smaller.

This design features the same fun bobbles as the Kip Bun Hat, with a knit look brim, and of course two big and cozy holes at just the right place for pigtails or hair puffs!

• Yarn: I Love This Yarn 
• Hook: H8/5mm 
• Gauge: 6 sts = 2" in HDC or 1 bobble repeat = 1"
• Materials: Tapestry needle
• Difficulty: Easy
• Finished size: child/toddler apx. 16" before stretching

These are the type of tapestry needles I use. Yarn needles are often too big for successfully weaving in ends, and worst of all most of them are plastic. Great for kids and beginners, not so much for hard core crocheters. Trust me a big metal needle makes all the difference!



Special Stitches:

• Hdc Inc- half double crochet increase, make two hdc in the the next st
• Bobble Stitch - yo, insert hook into next st, yo, draw up loop, yo, draw thru two loops, *yo, insert hook into same st, yo, draw up a loop, yo, draw thru two loops*, repeat** two more times, (5 loops on hook) yo, draw thru all loops. Bobble will poof out behind work.
• Work in the third loop- make stitch indicated in the long horizontal bar found on the wrong side of the hdc stitch as opposed to the "v" in the top of the stitch.

Note: Ch at end of round does not count as a st, always make first st of next round in same st as join. Bobbles will not be aligned otherwise.

Form a magic ring.

Round 1: hdc 10 into magic ring, join with a sl st, ch 1. (10 sts)

Round 2: make hdc inc in each st around, join, ch 1. (20 sts)

Round 3: *hdc, hdc inc*, repeat ** around, join, ch 1. (30 sts)

Round 4: *hdc, hdc, hdc inc*, repeat ** around, join, ch 1. (40 sts)

Round 5: *hdc, hdc, hdc, hdc inc*, repeat ** around, join, ch 1. (50 sts)

Round 6: *hdc 10, hdc inc*, repeat ** four times, hdc in remaining 6 sts, join, ch 1. (54 sts)

Round 7: hdc 11, ch 5, skip next five sts, hdc 22, ch 5, skip next five sts, hdc in remaining 11 sts, join, ch 1. (two holes made)

Round 8: hdc in each st and ch around, join, ch 1. (54 sts)

Round 9: TURN work, sc, bobble, *sc, sc, bobble, sc, sc*, repeat ** around until one st remains, sc in last st, join, turn, ch 1. (18 bobbles made)

Rounds 10 & 11: sc in each st around, join, ch 1. (54 sts)

Round 12: repeat round 9.

Rounds 13 & 14: repeat rounds 10 & 11.

Round 15: repeat round 9.

Rounds 16 & 17: repeat rounds 10 & 11.

Round 18: repeat round 9.

Round 19: hdc in each st around, join, ch 1. (54 sts)

Round 20: hdc in the third loop of each st around, join, ch 1.

Round 21: sc in the third loop of each st around, join, ch 1.

Round 22: sl st loosely around brim, join, fasten off, weave in ends.
