Camo Hunting Snood

Hey friends! This post will contain affiliate links, when you click them I get a small benefit that supports my blog and more free content!

The Camo Hunting Snood and Neck Gaiter was originally designed for my father-in-law. Last Christmas I made him one in bright orange for hunting. I had so much orange yarn left over. Did you know orange yarn is hard to find in just the right hue? Big Girl's former cheerleading squad had colors of orange and black. I know- Halloween is the first thought in your mind! It was in mine too. I really disliked it at first. But you know what was so funny about that? As the year went on and we got closer to our teammates and grew in camaraderie and team spirit, we came to truly LOVE those colors, it was black and orange every day! I made lots of team spirit headbands and sold them at football games. I also got a little over zealous in my search for the perfect hue of orange to match the team colors. I accumulated a little too much orange yarn and that is how the original hunting snood was born.

Where we live hunters are required to wear a certain amount of bright orange for safety, and I knew that my father in law only wore beanies and low collared shirts and coats. This left his neck open to the chill of winter winds. I designed this warming collar for him to be able to pull all the way up to his nose and tuck under the back of his hat and still be long enough to cover his neck deep into the collar of his coat or sweatshirt.

My husband said "It's a gaiter!" when he saw it. I had to google, and yes there are tight to the skin cowls that when worn up on the neck are called "neck gaiters". A gaiter on its own is actually worn on the ankles and protects pants and the top of boots from water. Well, when his dad surprised me by asking for a second snood/neck gaiter it dawned on me, I never wrote the pattern down the first time I made it! How silly of me! Necessity is the mother of invention, and everything- I mean everything- I design or create from scratch for someone I always write it down and blog it later. That's where 99% of my crochet patterns come from!

So saved from being lost to memory, here for you is the cowl/neck warmer/snood/gaiter/whateveryouwannnacallit that your favorite hunter has been waiting for. I didn't have a man handy when I was photographing this, so I just put it on and took selfies. But my husband has tried it on and guarantees that it is stretchy enough for him, his dad and just about any size man or woman.

If you like the look of the ribbed design, make it for a woman, make it in any color, size it down for a kid, add stripes, change yarns, get crazy! Half the fun of crocheting is the wonderful customization nature of it. You can make anything you like in any way you choose.

I worked in Red Heart Super Saver in Camouflage because camo-coloring was specifically requested of me. I think that this would look great in Red Heart's pink camo too, or any variegated for that matter.

Hook: I9/5.5mm
Yarn: Red Heart Super Saver in Camouflage or any worsted (4-medium) weight yarn
Gauge: 4 rows, 7 sts = 2” square in hdc(blo)
Difficulty: Beginner
Materials: Tapestry Needle
Finished Size: 11.5” long and 8.25” wide (tube)

Special Stitches: BLO, working in the “Back Loop Only” - make indicated stitch in the back loop or the part of the “V” farthest from your body when looking at top of stitch. This creates a ribbing effect in the textile.

Notes: Pattern is worked in rows, and garment is stitched up both side seams to form a tube. Follow gauge listed to replicate results photographed. Garment will be stretchy enough for a woman or a man, and will stretch more over time and use.

Snood:

Chain 42
Row 1: hdc in third ch from hook, and in each ch across, ch 2, turn. (40 sts)
Row 2: hdc in blo of each st across, ch 2, turn. (40 sts)
Rows 3-35: repeat row 2. Do not break yarn at end of last row.

Finishing:

Fold garment in half lengthwise, matching up stitches from first and last rows.
Ch 1, slip stitch across, through both layers (both sets of stitches) to join garment into a tube shape. (40 sl sts) Fasten off at end of row. Weave in ends.

Thanks for stitching with me, hope you enjoy this pattern! Be sure to follow me on Instagram, Facebook and Pinterest

The Snowball Bun Hat!

Thanks for indulging me friends. The season of bun hats continues with my second variation on the Kip Bun Hat. This one is simply precious! It's called the Snowball because the bobbles are in white, contrasted by a rich navy blue. The pattern features alternating color changes and the changes on the brim are especially complicated. This pattern will be an Intermediate Level for this reason.

I have used a shimmering white yarn to make the "snowballs" really pop and shine! This hat is an adorable winter style that you will truly love! It's definitely one of a kind.

Now about those color changes...

It's gonna get tricky around here. I've managed to find a way, and I'm sure it's not the only way nor am I the first one to do this, but I haven't really seen this done anywhere else. I change colors every other stitch while simultaneously alternating between dc and fpdc to create a depth in the color field unlike anything else I've seen lately! It's a pretty cool way to crochet and it looks amazing! I don't even know what to call this technique, but I can describe it to you as best I can and hope you're willing to try it out with me.

Here's how I do it...

The last three rounds of the hat are comprised of double crochet and front post double crochet stitches that alternate colors every other stitch. The dc's are made in white and the fpdc's are made in navy. To accomplish this we must switch colors before the stitch is completed. Make the stitch indicated up to the final yo, then pick up the alternating color and finish the stitch. Continue by beginning the next stitch in the color just picket up, to the final yo, then pick up previous color and finish the stitch. Continue in this manner, repeating the process to make each stitch in alternating color pattern. What this creates is a rich and dynamic texture, the navy fpdc stitches pop out from the white background mimicking the bobbles above them in contrast.

It may take some practice, it's definitely an awkward maneuver to switch yarns so often. Once you get the hang of it, this decorative technique is one you can employ to add visual interest to any number of projects... including my Sweet Scallops Boot Cuffs, which also use fpdc stitches!

Andi Bun Hat

Hey Friends! This post is going to contain affiliate links which benefit me if you click, thanks for supporting more free content from Haute Kippy.

I told you this would be a season of bun hats, and I won't hold out on you. Even though I didn't make enough time to publish two patterns last month (I tend to prioritize my kids over the blog most of the time) I've still got some new designs and some new plays on old designs that I'm drying to share with you. Recently I've been delving into colorwork and have been having a lot of fun re-working old patterns into amazing new creations.

Today we're taking a new look at Kip's Bun Hat. A client recently showed me a photograph of a hat in certain colors, burgundy, teal and rich royal purple, but she wanted it in the style of the Kip. Intrigued, I began working the rounds of my most familiar pattern alternating the colors into what turned out to be a stunningly beautiful combination.

Named in my client's honor the Andi was born! It turned out absolutely spectacularly and I couldn't be more pleased.

We are going to be doing some color changes, so this makes the Andi one of my few Intermediate Level patterns. If you're still a beginner, don't be intimidated, try it out! And if you love the look of Andi but want to make it in a solid color, or just aren't feeling the color changes then visit the original Kip's Bun Hat pattern.

Another word to the wise, any of my bun hats can be converted to toboggans (with no bun hole) by using the following formula:

Bun Hat to Regular Hat Conversion Formula

  1. Begin with magic ring
  2. Stitch 10 into magic ring, pull closed, join, ch 1 (10 sts)
  3. Stitch 2 into each st around, join, ch 1 (20 sts)
  4. *Stitch 1, st 2* around, join, ch 1 (30 sts)
  5. continue following pattern at round 2.
This works because all my bun hat patterns start with 30 stitches around an elastic hair tie. The diameter of the hair tie is approximately two rounds of crochet, therefore, to begin without a hole, make two rounds which eventually equals 30 stitches. Then you can continue any bun hat pattern after the beginning hair tie round. The formula uses the word "stitch" instead of specifying which stitch to ensure it is applicable to any pattern. Simply substitute in whichever stitch the bun hat you are working requires. For my bun hats, that's usually the HDC. It's kinda my favorite stitch. Now let's do this!

Gina Messy Bun Hat

Hi friends, this post contains affiliate links.

Are you still loving the messy bun hat trend? I sure am! I think lots of designers and crocheters are just getting started and some may even have designs stashed away for next fall. Here in West Virginia it seems spring is already upon us. We've had a banner week of warm and unseasonable temperatures- but that doesn't mean winter is over. We usually have a final snow at the end of the season around Easter, and I'm on the lookout for the temps to drop.

That's why I've got one more bun hat for you this winter. Like my other design this hat is made from the top down starting around an elastic hair tie. I really love using post stitches. They create such great texture and long lines. I've also had fun working the the third loop of crochet stitches. Another pattern that uses this technique is my Luxury Spa Wrap. You can read that guest post for more information about how to crochet in the third loop. The technique is described in detail in the main post on Stitch and Unwind

If you'd like to own this pattern in a clean, portable, printer friendly, ad-free version, a PDF download is available in my Etsy shop, OR click the buy now button  to get it from my Ravelry shop! Thanks for supporting more free content from Haute Kippy!

In case you need supplies, these are my favorite hooks:

...and this is my favorite yarn! I simply adore the feel and workability of Red Heart's With Love line. The Gina hat featured is photographed in Pewter.

Gina Bun Hat Free Crochet Pattern

Difficulty: Easy
Gauge: 6 sts = 2" in hdc and 5 rows fpdc = 2"
Hook: H8/5mm
Yarn: Red Heart Super Saver in Heather Gray or any worsted
Finished size: apx 20" around and 7.5" from elastic to brim before stretching to fit.
Notions: yarn needle, elastic hair tie apx. 2" in diameter

Special Stitches:

fpdc- front post double crochet: yo, insert hook from front to back around post of indicated st on the right side of work, yo, and draw up a loop, yo draw thru 2 loops, yo draw thru last 2 loops on hook. fpdc made.

hdc in 3rd loop: keeping right side racing, yo, insert hook into third loop (horizontal bar located directly below "v") on the wrong/back side of the indicated st, yo draw up a loop, yo draw thru all loops on hook. This forces the "v" on the top of the stitches of the prev round to fold over and face outward, creating a horizontal "knit-look" pattern on the right side of the work.

Note: Turning chs at beg of rounds do not count as sts. Make first st of round in same st as turning chs. Be sure to meet gauge to obtain size listed in pattern. Feel free to adjust hook size or number of rounds before brim in order to make a custom fit.

Gina Bun Hat:

Round 1: Join yarn to elastic hair tie and ch 1, hdc 30 around hair tie, join with a sl st to first hdc, ch 2.

Round 2: dc in the first st, and in each st around, join, ch 2. (30 sts)

Round 3: dc in first st, then fpdc around same st, *dc around next st then fpdc around same st*, repeat ** around, join, ch 2. (60 sts)

Round 4: dc in first st, fpdc in the next, *dc, fpdc*, repeat ** around, join, ch 2.

Rounds 5-12: repeat round 4, ch only 1 at end of round 12.

Round 13-15: hdc in third loop of each st around, join, ch 1.

Round 16: sc in the third loop of each hdc from the prev round, join, do not ch.

Round 17: sl st loosely in each st around, join, fo.

Hint- a blind join looks great here, at the end of round 17.

Here's how: sl st around until one st remains. Cut yarn leaving long tail for weaving in ends. Pull tail all the way through last sl st, eliminating the loop your hook went through. Thread yarn needle with tail. Sew yarn tail under "v" of next st (the first sl st made), and through the other side. Sew tail in through middle of the last "v" made and out on wrong side of work. Invisible join made. Knot tail once and then weave in ends as normal.

And there you have it! The fabulous plush ridges of the Gina Bun hat, with a stylish knit look brim.

Pattern Update! - Gina Beanie

I've had a request to turn the Gina into a beanie (with no hole at the top). I worked out a great looking conversion. We're still making the hat from the top down, but instead of crocheting into an elastic hair tie, we'll start with a ring...

Form magic ring.

Round 1: dc 15 into magic ring, join with a sl st to first dc made, ch 2. Pull starting tail to tightly close ring. (15 sts)

Round 2: dc into first dc, then fpdc around same st, *dc around next st then fpdc around same st*, repeat ** around, join, ch 2. (30 sts)

Round 3: dc into first dc, then fpdc around same st, *dc around next st then fpdc around same st*, repeat ** around, join, ch 2. (60 sts)

Round 4: dc in first st, fpdc in the next, *dc, fpdc*, repeat ** around, join, ch 2. (60 sts)

Rounds 5-14: repeat round 4, ch only 1 at end of round 14.

Round 15-17: hdc in third loop of each st around, join, ch 1.

Round 18: sc in the third loop of each hdc from the prev round, join, do not ch.

Round 19: sl st loosely in each st around, join, fo.

And that should do it to convert the Gina Bun Hat into the Gina Beanie! Let me know what you think of this conversion, and if it works out for you!

Toddler Quick Mitts

My little one loves to wear mittens. She also loves pockets. If a shirt or pants have pockets in them she gets very excited and wants immediately to hide her little hands. I've bought some small mittens for her in the past, and we always seem to loose one of the pair. Where it goes, we'll never know.

Northern West Virginia winters are long, gray and a mixture of snow, rain, sunless days and varying temperatures. One week, we expect snowfall, the next moderate temps and intermittent rain. It's super fun.... not. As a rule of thumb in our family, we wear coats until April. Just because it's randomly 56 degrees today doesn't mean you can run around coat-less. It's not good for the body, and roller coaster highs and lows contribute a lot to decreasing people's immune systems.

We can also experience very cold temperatures. Two winters ago, we had an arctic blast that still shows its visible scars on many trees and bushes. It was so cold that even some evergreens were dying. Driving down the road, I can still see many people's trees and bushes have dead branches on their lower third where the sub-zero air and snow touched them. A reminder of that bitter cold winter.

This is why children need mittens. They need super cute mittens, easy mittens- ones you can whip up yourself in minutes. That's what I did for my little one when I realized she might need them, and the only pair I could find was no longer a pair!

These Toddler Quick Mitts can be made using any worsted weight yarn, and a size H8/5mm hook. Employing the same techniques as the adult Quick Mitts, these baby versions are sized down for a 2-3 year old and completely cover little fingers, keeping them safe and toasty warm.

Of course if you live in a warmer environment, or you need your toddler to be able to play on a tablet or phone while wearing mittens, simply stop and fasten off at the last row before the decreases to make chic little fingerless versions.

Make it unique:
-Try in a colorful variegated for even more fun!
-Use remnants for a fun and quirky boho style stash buster project!
-Stripe the rows for an easy exercise in color work!
-Customize or alternate colors for team spirit!

Let's get started!

Kip's Bun Hat

Hi friends! This post contains affiliate links.

The messy bun hat. It's viral, it's trending, it's everywhere.

I first saw this hat in a shared post on facebook. It was a blonde girl, wearing a normal looking beanie, toboggan, skully hat- depending on what part of the country you're in. The yarn was variegated in jewel tones, and reminded me of Red Heart's Unforgettable in Stained Glass. Only, there was something different going on, she had a pile of blonde hair on top of her hat! What sorcery is this!? Imagine, a winter hat with a hole on top for people to pull their lengths of hair through. It's so simple its genius. Who came up with the first bun hat? I wish I knew. Great ideas like that become truly amazing when they go viral. Whoever that crocheter is, they must be awfully proud of themselves! That same picture I saw can be found with a pattern on Ravelry. Since seeing that first post, bun hats have blown up. Everyone is making them!

I admit I was intrigued at first, but I soon felt an aversion to the trend creeping around in my head as I mulled the idea.

I'm going to tell you a secret. There are two things I really don't like crocheting: hats and scarves. I know, lame. I specialize in accessories, it's practically the only thing I do. Yet the two things I avoid making at all costs are the two most popular accessories that crocheters and knitters make and sell. There are reasons for this. A: I think scarves are boring. They are long, repetitive and take forever to make. I feel queasy just thinking about it. And 2: Everyone and their grandmother (literally) makes hats. I've seen table after table at craft shows of crocheted hats, and I want to be different.

I want to make things people want but can't find. If I set up a vendor table somewhere (still waiting on an answer to the prayer of having my first table) I want to have unique and original designs that outshine plain ol' hats and scarves. Mostly I want to keep my creative juices flowing so that I can turn my new ideas into workable free patterns for all the crocheters out there. BUT, I also want to give the people what they want.

...And the people want MESSY BUN HATS!

Sometimes when I'm creating a new design, I search for inspiration, I look at pictures and see what else is out there. This time, I shut my computer, got out the old pen and paper, and began to crochet. I wrote down my pattern round by round, and created it completely on the fly. Finally when I was done, I searched "bun hat" on Ravelry, and I'll be darned, not one of those hats looked anything like this one! This hat is a very unique design indeed, and I'm so pleased with it. I hope you will be too.

I'm not sure how other bun hats are constructed, like I said I went into the design process blind, but this hat is made from the top down, and starts with a pony tail hair elastic. I piggy backed off of my latest boot cuff pattern because I really like it when things match and people can have sets of accessories. From the top of the hat, we graduate down into the same bobble repeat as the Pom Pom Boot Cuffs. For the rim of the hat, another familiar pattern repeat- the ribbing from the Sweet Scallops Boot Cuffs. These signature design features make Kip's Bun Hat a fun addition to your Haute Kippy collection, or any accessory wardrobe.
