Elizabeth Bun Hat

I'll tell you what, for me not being a "hat person" I have sure been having fun making and designing some new bun hats lately! I've enjoyed looking through my stash and working on color combinations. I've been inspired by special requests from customers, and have had my imagination sparked by new yarn purchases. I've come up with updates for previous designs, and fun ideas for new patterns. It's going to be a season of bun hats here on Haute Kippy!

After some unforeseen circumstances occurred this summer, I ended up having to take an unwanted hiatus from working on crochet, the blog and pattern development in general. I had set a goal for myself as a new blogger to publish two new patterns a month over the summer, and when crochet season starts up again (i.e. now) I would up the ante to four new patterns a month, one for each week. Unfortunately for me, the things that happened late this summer prevented me from meeting that new goal. So I'm starting fresh this month and keeping my goal at two new patterns per month. Yay for you! We're taking baby steps here on the homefront and until the situations allow, we will just be grateful for God's grace and mercy and take each day, week and month as it comes.

The good news is that the Lord shelters and protects those who love Him and I will undoubtedly emerge from this trial better for having withstood the test, purified, as gold withstands the fires of refinement. If you ever need encouragement during a dark time and have no where to turn, please know dear friend and fellow crafter, that you can reach out to me and I will share my source of strength with you. I heart you. Now dry it up- we've got stuff to make! ;)

I've since been blessed with my first craft/vendor show opportunity- a long standing prayer faithfully answered! Once I got back to work, I couldn't stop making items to stock my craft table. I'm so excited finally show my wares and make real sales!

Another exciting development is the announcement of my upcoming mini-eBook! So here's my latest bun hat, and one of my first yarn-specific patterns. I have been designing things that can be made out of any old worsted weight yarn. But I've been focusing on colorwork lately and the patterns you'll see coming forward will likely call for very specific yarns in certain colors in order to get the look shown. I often mix yarn brands so if you're a purist, be forewarned! I shop at the big four, (Hobby Lobby, AC Moore, Michaels and JoAn) and very often use store brands such as Nicole, and ILTY. I may mix brands but I won't mix words!

Yarn: I Love This Yarn in Graymist and I Love This Yarn Metallic in White
Hook: H8/5mm
Materials: Yarn needle, 2” hair elastic
Difficulty: Easy
Gauge: 6 sts = 2” in hdc
Finished size: apx. 20” around before stretching to fit



Special Stitches:

Hdc Inc- half double crochet increase, make two hdc in the the next st

stitch in third loop- make stitch in the horizontal bar located on the wrong side of the hdc, directly below the “v”.

Notes: Make first stitch of round in same stitch as join throughout pattern. Ch 1 at beginning of round does not count as stitch. Carry both yarns along inside of hat, picking up and dropping colors as indicated.

Bun Hat:

Join graymist to hair elastic, ch 1

Round 1: hdc 30 around hair elastic, join to first hdc made with a sl st, and ch 1. (30 sts)

Round 2: *hdc, hdc, hdcInc*, repeat from ** around, join, ch 1. (40)

Round 3: pick up white, *hdc, hdc, hdc, hdcInc*, repeat from ** around, join ch 1. (50)

Round 4: *hdc, hdc, hdc, hdc, hdcInc*, repeat from ** around, join ch 1. (60)

Round 5: pick up graymist, hdc in each st around, join, ch 1

Round 6: hdc in each st around, join, ch 1.

Round 7: pick up white, hdc in each st around, join, ch 1.

Round 8: hdc in each st around, join, ch 1.

Rounds 9-12: repeat rounds 5-8.

Rounds 13-14: repeat rounds 5-6

Round 15: pick up white, hdc in each st around, join ch 1.

Rounds 16: sc in the third loop of each st around, join, ch 1.

Round 17: loosely sl st in each st around, join, fo.



Bow:

Using graymist, Ch 14

Row 1: dc in third ch from hook, dc in next three chs, hdc, sc, sc, hdc, dc in last four chs, ch 2, turn. (12 sts)

Row 2: dc in first four sts, hdc, sc, sc, hdc, dc in last four sts, ch 2, turn.

Row 3:  dc in first four sts, hdc, sc, sc, hdc, dc in last four sts, then ch 1, Drop graymist, pick up white, pivot bow to work along raw edge, sc evenly across making 2 sc in the end of each dc across (i.e. 6 sc along raw edge), ch 1, pivot work, sc in each st across, ch 1, pivot work, sc evenly across raw edge as before, ch 1, pivot work, sc in each st across, ch 1, join at corner. (Invisible join looks best) FO, weave in ends.


Finishing:

Thread yarn needle with a length of white and wrap yarn around center of bow, when wrapped, sew back and forth on wrong side of bow to secure yarn tail. Thread needle with coordinating yarn and sew bow onto center back of hat below bun opening. Weave in all ends.

Bow Bow Barrette

These little girls love bows! Big bows, small bows, sparkly bows.... crocheted bows? Yes. We are all about bows in my house. My little one will wear a bow every day and my big girl loves to wear big bows to school with a ponytail. I don't know about you but I'm not particularly good at working with ribbon, and tying bows. Also, wide grosgrain ribbon can be pretty pricey! But you and I know how to crochet, right? And we've also got tons of yarn, don't we? It's OK I won't tell anyone how big your stash is! So lets make our own trendy hair bow in any color we want!

A Bow Bow in Big Girl's school colors!

I'm using a selection of Red Heart Super Saver worsted weight yarns, as well as some small balls of scrap yarn I had laying around. These pretty bows are the perfect stash buster! I developed this project as an adaptation of my applique bow pattern. Try a Bow Bow in variegated yarn!

To make this crocheted Bow Bow Barrette you will need to purchase alligator hair clips. 

I purchased these alligator clips from Amazon. They are nice and large 3" in length, just perfect for this project and many others. They're a good value and are exactly the same style clip that comes on large fancy store-bought ribbon bows. 
   

You'll also need a hot glue gun, yarn needle and any worsted weight yarn. Here's a great glue gun, perfect for this project. With so many other household uses, if you don't already have a glue gun, now is the time.

Row 3: dc2tog, dc in next two sts, hdc, hdc, sc, sc, hdc, hdc, dc in next two sts, dc2tog, then ch 1, pivot to work along raw edge, sc evenly across making 6 sc along raw edge, ch 1, pivot work, sc in each st across, ch 1, pivot, sc evenly across raw edge as before, ch 1, pivot, sc in each st across, ch 1, join at corner. (invisible join looks best) FO weave in ends.

Finishing:

Layer bow on top of bow tail, keeping right sides facing up. Thread yarn needle with a length of yarn and wrap yarn around center of bow, when wrapped, sew back and forth on wrong side of bow to secure yarn tail. Insert alligator clip through wrapping, and hot glue underneath to permanently secure.

Tisha Bow Headband

Hi  to all my happy hookers! I hope you're having a fantastic summer! I know I am. I've been saving this little ditty for you, for a rainy day (or more like a sunny, extremely busy summer month). As a farewell to June mini-celebration, here is a fun little pattern I worked up a long time ago in a galaxy far, far away....

The Tisha 

It's a pattern named for someone very special. You know who you are! *winky face, heart emoji*

I love this simple headband. I've made tons of them and have been making them for months. Only, I've never written the pattern down until now. I've kept the original specs on a tiny handwritten note in the cubby next to my big comfy work chair. It's a wonderful beginner pattern, and is very easy to work. For the experienced crocheter, it can be worked in as little as a half an hour. I've included instructions for making in three sizes: adult, child and toddler.

This pattern is so versatile, it can be made in so many different ways. No matter how you choose to construct this headband, it'll turn out adorable every time- guaranteed! It's wide enough to be an ear warmer and is a very popular in-demand winter weather accessory. You can make it more narrow to be a warm weather sweet headband.You can make it to fit any person, and make it as wide or as narrow as you like. Change colors for a striping effect, work in solids, metallics or variegated for a bounty of beautiful easy to make, quick to work headbands.

Makes a great gift. Make them in team colors, or make enough for the whole team! I did them in black and orange last year and all my daughter's little cheerleader friends looked so cute sporting them. I also paired this headband with my Quick Mitts fingerless mittens in matching colors and gave them as gifts this past Christmas. They were a massive hit- everyone loves getting matching sets of accessories!

This headband, like some of my other patterns includes the foundation half double crochet (FHDC). If you don't know how to foundation crochet, I highly suggest you visit YouTube, and look up some instructional videos. I have also included written instructions for the stitch with my Easy Fishnet Gloves pattern. It's a very valuable skill to learn because sometimes chaining, and working into a starting chain can create a tightened effect, making the foundation row not as stretchy and wearable as the rest of the garment. To make every row equally stretchable and comfortable to wear, chainless foundation crochet is the way to go!

If you're not quite there yet, have no fear, even a novice crocheter can make this pattern. Simply Chain the appropriate number according to the size you wish to make, join, and work into the starting chain for round 1. Just be sure to chain on the looser side if you are a tight tension worker.

Free Crochet Pattern

Hook: H8/5MM
Yarn: any Worsted
Gauge: 7 sts = 2” in HDC
Notions: Yarn needle
Difficulty: Easy

Note: To make band wider for ear warmers, make more than 8 rows. To make a summer headband, make fewer rows. When making for child/toddler- 5 rows is usually wide enough. Feel free to get creative when making your own headbands, they can be as wide or as narrow as you want.

Round 1: FHDC 63, join to top of first fhdc with a sl st.
(For Child size 57, toddler 53)

Round 2: Ch 1, hdc in same st as join, and in every stitch around, join. (63 sts)

Rounds 3-8: Repeat round 1. FO at end of round 8.

Finishing: Use the starting tail to close the small gap at the first join and attach the bottom ends of the foundation row together. Then take the starting and ending tails, and tie them together over top of the right side of the headband, trim ends. Take extra yarn and wrap around tied/joined section of headband repeatedly to form a bow's "knot". Wrap to apx. 1" wide to hide the seam. Break yarn, and thread tail with a yarn needle. Turn headband to wrong side and secure end of wrapping yarn by sewing back and forth under the "knot" and through headband, taking care stitches do not bleed through to right side. Sew back and forth several times to permanently secure it in place. Cut yarn close to "knot".

"The Tia" Bow Headband

We've all seen these super cute headbands shaped like bows circulating on the internet and social media, now it can be yours. 

My sweet cousin, let's call her... Tia! Is getting married very soon. We've been all abuzz, traveled hither and thither,  laughed, cried, tried on dresses, planned and most importantly prayed. Her time has finally come this December. Amid all this bustle and glee, I asked my bride what else I could do for her, (aside from those other maidly duties) what could I crochet for her?

She replied with a simple yet genius request. "I have this bow ear warmer headband and it's falling apart. Would you make me another?" Would I!?!? (ecstatically) I thought to myself.
I absolutely will.
And, I'll design my own!
And.... I'll make enough for the whole bridal party!
AND... I'll publish the pattern!
AND.... I'LL MAKE IT FREE!

These headbands are adorable. They're on Pinterest, they're for sale on Etsy, patterns are all over Ravelry too! But you can make your own, and you can make it tonight! With a partial skein or leftover ball and one evening you can have this hot trendy item and make it in time to wear before the weather turns.

This design is a super easy beginner pattern, and for the more experienced crocheter, a fun break from large or complicated patterns- you could knock it out in an hour!

Makes a great and heartfelt homemade gift too! *Wink *Wink! I'll be popping these babies out in a rainbow of colors, using every bit in my stash. I might get crazy and try out some variegated yarns too!

The Tia Bow Headband Crochet Pattern

Hook: H/8 5mm

Yarn: Any Worsted

Gauge: 12 sts, 5 rows ~4” in DC

Notions: Yarn needle

Finished Dimensions: 20” around, 4 ¾ wide

Difficulty: Beginner

Notes: Alternating rows of single crochet and double crochet feature the more attractive right side of double crochet stitches. Work 14 stitches across for 42 rows, then slip stitch the ends together to form a tube. Gather the band at the seam and wrap with extra yarn to form a faux knot apx. 1” wide. A beginning crocheter who knows basic crochet terminology, how to slip stitch, single crochet and double crochet will be able to follow this pattern. To resize for a larger or smaller head, calculate number of needed rows by 2 rows = 1 ¼”.

Headband:

Chain 16

Row 1: dc in the third ch from hook, and make 1 dc in each ch across, ch 1, turn. (14 sts)

Row 2: sc in the first st (same st as turning ch here and throughout), make 1 sc in each st across, ch 2, turn.

Row 3: dc in the first st, make 1 dc in each st across, ch 1, turn.

Rows 4-42: Repeat rows 2 and 3 respectively, ending on a row 2 repeat. Do not ch 2 at last row repeat.

Finishing:

Align ends together, matching stitches across with right side facing out. Working through both layers at the same time, insert hook through the first sts and sl st the two sides together. Continue slip stitching the ends together, keeping stitches on both sides aligned with each other. At row end, make one final sl st.

Break yarn leaving a very long tail, 12” - 18”. Cinch the headband at the center seam and wrap yarn around snugly, but not too tightly. Continue wrapping the yarn tail, creating a faux knot apx. 1” wide, which makes the headband look like a bow. Securely weave in ends.
